Is your car is OBD1 or OBD-2 compliant car. OBD-1 compliant car is old car with that have it own scan tool or diagnostic tool before year 1996 which means that it scan tool or diagnostic tool can not be used in another car for example Nissan car scan tool or diagnostic tool can not be used in Mazda car while OBD-2 compliant car is new car from year 1996 that their can be used in different cars like Nissan, Mazda, GM and Honda etc.
All newer cars from year 1996 were OBD2 compliant cars while all cars and light trucks built for sale in the United States of America after 1996 are required to be OBD-2 compliant. Many cars before or after year 1996 have been built with a new onboard communications protocol called CAN (Controller Area Network) apart from Mercedes- Benz because they have started used this type of CAN (Controller Area Network) around year 1992.
What is CAN (Controller Area Network). CAN (Controller Area Network) is essentially an engineering standard for how ECU and modules talk to one another via the serial data bus in car wiring system. CAN is now being used on and more on newer cars but United States car manufacturer were not allowed to use CAN until model year 2003.
